I've seen a few posts here both Pro and Con virtually relocating to Idaho. I intend this thread to examine both the positive and negative aspects of living in Idaho.

Beginning, the positive...The hunting and line-fishing is great! A lot of unspoiled wilderness to hike and camp in. Nifty breathtaking possibilities for painting and photography. I've met a lot of friendly, open-handed and open-hearted people.

There is a lot of work here, esp. in the southern part of the state. Twin Falls has an unemployment rate under v%.

The cost of living is low. You can find prissy houses and property at a fraction of the cost of more urban states. Nutrient prices are proficient..with the fly in the ointment that Idaho taxes nutrient items.

If yous are Bourgeois in your politics and culture, Idaho will open up you with open up artillery. If you believe that the more than guns you take, the amend..this is the place. If immigrants and refugees make you think of terrorists, you'll have a lot of visitor.

The negative....the schools suck. No other way to put it. I'll not carp to quote stats, but they are easy to find..dead last in many areas. The state pays its teachers a horrible wage equally compared to other states and it shows in the number of Idaho students who go to, and terminate, college.

In that location is a limited social safety net. The state does not offer a short-term disability plan, so if you get Cancer or have to take a medical go out, unless your employer offers a program, you're out of luck.
Don't get hurt on the job...the Workman'due south Comp. is limited and the employer and the State are aggressive in limiting and fighting claims.

It's heir-apparent beware in the job market..if yous get a good company you can do well. There are a lot of temp-to-hire staffing agencies..some work out and some don't. Simply be aware that while you are working for said agencies you have very few rights and tin can be terminated for no cause. In fact, in Idaho, unless yous take a contract with your employer, you tin be terminated "at volition".

My have..if you take no children of school age and are bourgeois in your cultural views..y'all'll honey Idaho.

If you're liberal in your cultural views, care nigh your children's education, think people who say "Amurika" are idiots, believe that guns endanger more than than protect..than Idaho is not for you.

I concord with this except for the education part. People who intendance about their kids' education either find a expert school, or homeschool. Homeschooling is very common.

Good mail! I concord with yous on most of it except to say I call back Idaho is a great identify to heighten children. My son is not in school yet but at that place are so many factors to consider besides just education IMO. Have had visitors from Texas even accept notice of how family friendly it is and kids overall seem to be a chip more behaved here than other places. But your other points spot on! : )

Are you lot yourself a product of Idaho schooling? I realize this could be a typo, only I see information technology all the time. Many people haven't even learned to distinguish between the bones words "than", which is a comparative, and "then", which means afterward, or delineates a indicate in time.

I'm staunchly conservative, care deeply about my children'due south pedagogy, think people who say "Amurika" are dolt hicks, and believe guns are a good affair in the possession of mentally-healthy law-constant individuals. Idaho is definitely for me, nonetheless only certain parts of information technology. Your blanket declarations are woefully naïve.

Default welllll....

In truth, dashed the postal service off..thank you for your catch of my sophomoric grammer...and I suppose my habit of dots galore bespeaks a certain lack of educational sophistication. Anyway, I would hope that the substance of my mail can somewhat make upwards for my grammatical errors.....As I said, there are many good people in Idaho, I'one thousand certain y'all're i of them.

The facts, sadly, speak for themselves. Idaho students lag far backside their counterparts in other states.

While a lack of grammatical definiteness on my part....may occasion some amusement on yours....it does not detract from the facts...my naivete notwithstanding.

EvilEye,

Information technology will exist neat to have yous posting here. We've needed someone from the Twin Falls area for years. Welcome to the forum.

I agree with some of what you wrote, disagree with some and call back you missed probably 75-80% of other aspects well-nigh life in Idaho. Many want to retire and don't intendance how one elementary school is vs, another. There are other problems with certain country numbers some emphasize.

My point is every type of educational opportunity exists in ID as other states. Perhaps in Twin Falls County or Magic Valley they ddon''t, but larger cities offer public, charter, Parochial, Christian, home and other school options. Additionally, ID does something I haven't seen before in other states. If there is room, parents tin place their children in whichever school district they want. The parents are responsible for the transportation to and from a dissimilar commune's school. However, options exist.

I've seen Presidential scholars come from towns of 4K. I've seen dozens obtain admission to Ivy League or other schools they wish to attend. In every case I've seen 2 factors in common. A want by the student to piece of work for what he/she received and involved parents at abode, involved daily with their kid's learning.

I'll concur with you that Idaho tends to spend less on students than some states. And information technology is worse in more rural settings.

Only I don't feel that it is fair to trash the schools in Idaho if someone lives in Vegas, New Mexico, the s side of Chicago and other locations where parents and students have to be concerned how much gang activeness and other violence a child would feel in a day.

Where is your Utopia that you use for comparing and dissimilarity?

MSR

P.S. Some of the states go corrected past auto right. Please everyone inquire, don't assume about a typo. We're really not that uptight in Idaho.

Honestly, the didactics organization in the U.s. has been inadequate for decades. If y'all really care about your childrens' instruction, and desire them to be competitive on the world stage, you have to take an active role in either supplementing their state supplied curriculum, or homeschooling them outright.

I agree that I could hardly practise Idaho justice in a few words..in truth, my post was more to inform than to inflame. I wish this thread to provide more than than I ever could to inform a prospective resident of what is waiting for him/her, warts and all.

Equally for my utopia/ Does not exist, of course...and was not my intent to suggest ane. I'm just proverb that national statistics show that Idaho public school lag behind about other states in college placement and completion.

Idaho is a nifty place to retire..your fixed income volition go further and the footstep of life suits many retirees.

I gauge what I'm saying, is that stating there are worse places to school your children does not in whatever fashion make Idaho Public schools amend.

What nearly the condition of the roads around the state? Are they well paved or total of potholes? Do they have good and fast snowfall removal like Denver or are they neglectful like California? Any strange driving laws or issues? Any specially hard DMV issues?

Good Questions...condition of roads often depends upon the fourth dimension of yr. Much of Idaho gets snowfall, and the plows do tear upwards the roads over the course of a wintertime. Hither in Twin Falls, the roads are promptly and efficiently plowed. Idaho knows how to do winter.

About the only strange driving laws hither that I know about are the way driving tests are administered. You take a written just like any other state..but the driving portion is administered past a private contractor. The Sheriff'southward office runs the issuing of commuter's licenses and registering of vehicles..in that location is no separate DMV. Idaho is strict well-nigh proof of residency and identification. An out of state DL and a letter with your name and Idaho address will suffice.
